TRADITIONAL AND MODERN ART
Various artistic expressions have a long tradition in the Indonesian Archipelago. One of the oldest art forms is the Wayang play. In its history Javanese mystic beliefs mix with Hindu and Islamic beliefs. Its various means of expression were practiced in the Royal Courts of Central Java, comprising the six high arts: poetry, mythological drama, shadow play, royal dance , gamelan and batik. Witnesses for us today are the stone-carved reliefs of the world-famous temples Borobodur and Prambanan.
Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Java. Both ancient and contemporary arts come alive in the art academies of the city – from traditional dance and gamelan to contemporary painting, drama and dance.
We have chosen the lively, bustling city of Yogyakarta with its wide spectrum of artists and galleries, its Sultan’s Palace – symbol of tradition -, its position amidst green shimmering rice fields, between a smoking volcano and the wild roaring Indian ocean as the center of your activities.
