BATIK AND WEAVING
Batik, practiced since the 17th century as one of the five fine arts at the royal courts of Central Java, is part of the great cultural and artistic traditions of Indonesia. Batik is more than a piece of fabric. Batik evokes a rich tapestry of historical and ritual associations.
The cultural identity of a nation is visible in its fabrics. The patterns are sources of endless interpretations and inspirations. There are designs that can only be worn by the Sultan’s family on the occasion of special ceremonies.
Nowadays traditional hand-made batik is still worn by the people on festive occasions. Besides that, an industry developed that produces fabrics printed with batik design in large quantities for daily use.
