TEMPLE - VOLCANO – VILLAGE
BEACH and CITY

P.1 BOROBODUR & PRAMBANAN TEMPLES
approx. 8 hrs.

In the cool of the morning, we drive through scenic back roads to the 1.100 year old Buddhist Temple, Borobudur. Discover for yourself why it is truly one of the wonders of the world. Feel its history and magic through the ancient carved stone reliefs. From Borobudur, we continue the pilgrim’s path with visits to the Pawon and Mendut Temples.
Our next stop is the village of Turi. We walk through the unique salak fruit (snake skin) plantation, tasting the fruit’s sweet/sour flavor in season. Continuing on our drive through the beautiful countryside, we reach the stately Hindu Prambanan Temple Complex.

P.2 ROYAL CITY TOUR & HANDICRAFT & PRAMBANAN
approx. 9 hrs.

We’ll step back into another era during our Royal City Tour. The Sultan’s Kraton or Palace is the cradle of Javanese art and culture, grand in its elegant, classic court architecture, full of ancient artifacts rich in meaning.
Nearby, Taman Sari, or the Water Palace comes alive as our guide describes this unique area used by the Sultans in days gone by for their recreation and strategic defense. Stops to the bustling Bird Market. Traditional Batik Home Industries and the Silversmiths of Kotagede complete the city tour. We then drive to the magnificent Hindu Temple Complex of Prambanan.

P. 3 BOROBUDUR TOURS
P. 3.1 BOROBUDUR TEMPLE AND HANDICRAFT
approx. 8 hrs

Driving through lovely scenic back roads, we arrive at the so called 8th wonder of the world, the astonishing Buddhist Temple of Borobodur, its carved ancient stone reliefs telling tales of earthly life and spiritual wisdom. From the deep mystery of Borobodur, we continue on to the Pawon Temple, concluding our journey of Java’s ancient history with a visit to the Mendut Temple. Coming back to the modern era, we stop to visit a peaceful, silent Buddhist Monastery nearby.
On the way back to Yogyakarta we stop to see skillful bamboo plaiters at work. We continue to Kasongan village to watch the ceramic process in this traditional pottery village. Our next stop is the skillful leather puppet craftsmen showing us the process of transferring a simple piece of buffalo leather into a wonderful art piece.

P.3.2 BOROBUDUR THRILL
approx. 10 hrs.

Our morning begins with a sensational drive to the Menoreh peak following the scenic back road through the intensely green countryside. Here we have time to enjoy the magnificent views of the Sindoro/Sumbing and Merapi/ Merbabu volcanoes. Hiking for about 1 ½ hours, we’ll pass through an impressive steeply terraced landscape with a bird’s eye view of the Borobudur Temple below us. We reboard the coach and head towards the stunning Buddhist Temple of Borobudur built in the 8th/9th century.

P.4 PRAMBANAN, CITY TOUR & BOROBUDUR
approx. 10 hrs.

Enjoy Java’s most awe inspiring Hindu shrine, the 9th century Prambanan Temple in the morning. From there we drive back to Yogya to step back into an era of days gone by. The colorful palace guards, elegant court architecture, ancient artifacts and melodious sounds of the gamelan playing bring the Sultan’s Palace or Kraton to life. Nearby we’ll visit traditional Batik Home Industries watching the batik artisans at work. The next stop is Kotagede, home of Yogya’s famous Silversmiths.
We’ll have an opportunity to have lunch on our own before we drive to Borobudur, the magnificent 8th/9th century Buddhist Temple, truly one of the wonders of the world.

P.5 SUKUH TEMPLE
P.5.1 Tour I: Solo – Sukuh – Ceto Temples
approx. 10 hrs.

Driving eastwards about 66 km, we arrive at Yogya’s sister city of Solo. Our first stop of the day is the Mangkunegaran Palace with its fascinating jewelry, wooden mask collection, antiques and ancient sacred artifacts. From there we continue to the Sukuh village, passing through lovely countryside to discover the mystery of the 14th century Sukuh Temple. Next, enjoy a scenic mountainous route to Ceto, another 14th century Hindu Temple.

P.5.2 Tour II: Ceto-Sukuh Temples – Tawangmangu
approx. 10 hrs.

We first drive to the slopes of Mount Lawu (3.265 m) to discover the 14th century Temple Complex of Ceto dedicated to Bima, often mysteriously covered in misty clouds. Continuing via narrow, windy roads, we arrive at the Sukuh Temple with its unique architecture. A 2 ½ hour walk through scenic farmlands to a roaring waterfall in the neighboring resort area of Tawangmangu completes our day. Reboard the coach and return to Yogya.

P.6 DIENG PLATEAU TOUR
approx. 10 hrs.

In the cool of the early morning, we leave the city behind as we head for the spectacular mountain climb through tobacco and tea plantations with magnificent views of Java’s volcanoes in the distance. Coming up over the mountain road, we drop down into the other world of the Dieng Plateau (2.100 m), home of the 7th century Hindu Temples standing watch on the plain. We’ll see the bubbling sulfur pools nearby and have a chance to walk around the mysterious, beautiful Lake Pengilon and Lake Warna with its deep turquoise water.

P.7 TREKKING
approx. 8 hrs.

We experience the depths of the Kaliurang rain forest during our five hour walk through valleys, gorges and rivers, en route to the slopes of Mount Merapi (2.950 m), one of the most active volcanoes in the world to watch sunrise. We’ll see a rich variety of tropical plants, fruits, birds, giant spiders, unique vegetation and the beautiful green landscape in the cool mountain air.

P.8 PARANGTRITIS BEACH
approx. 8 hrs.

Passing fertile, intensely green rice fields, we reach the black sandy beach of Parangtritis on the wild, roaring Indian Ocean. We’ll visit the graveyard of an Islamic mystic high on a hill overlooking the endless coastline. How about a visit to the mystical place where the first Sultan met the Queen of the South? Or we can take a horse cart ride along the wide beach. From the top of the cliff at a beautifully situated hotel, we’ll watch the spectacular sunset.

P.9 KRAKAL-BARON-PARANGTRITIS BEACHES
approx. 10 hrs.

The wild, roaring Indian Ocean, home of the “Queen of the South Sea,” welcomes us at three different beaches on Java’s rugged Southern coast. First we’ll drive to Krakal, with its white sand bays nestled between rocky outcrops. Our next stop is the simple fishing village of Baron, where we can taste the fresh catch of the day. Passing through dramatic, hilly, limestone rock formations, we reach the endless dark sand beach of Parangtritis, the mystical home and place of worship of the “Queen of the South Sea.”

P.10 IMOGIRI -THE ROYAL GRAVES & BATIK COURSE
approx. 10 hrs.

We’ll drive along fertile rice fields to the little village of Imogiri where our first stop is the traditional village market. We can discover the local food specialties like nangka (jackfruit), tempe and tahu (soja curd) etc.
After walking through an eucalyptus forest, we reach the impressive complex situated on a hill overlooking lush green rice fields. This peaceful sacred burial site of the Sultans is only open to the public on Sundays and Mondays from 10 am – 1 pm, Fridays from 1 –4 pm. In respect of this sacred place, traditional Javanese clothes which can be rented must be worn.
A traditional lunch is served in a private Javanese house. Then we will have the opportunity to learn the art of batik. We will proudly take home a simple piece.

P. 11 VILLAGE TOUR AND HANDICRAFT
approx. 8 hrs.

Morning hours on a traditional Village Market are most interesting. Next, we drive to the art museum of the famous Indonesian painter Joko Pekik. Winding through the countryside, passing sugarcane plantations and rice fields we reach Gending village to watch a master of Leather Puppet craftmanship at work. In Kasongan we see the art of making Clay Pottery traditionally and in modern design.
We continue back to Yogyakarta where you can make your own piece of Batik under the guidance of an experienced batiker.

P.12. HANDICRAFT & PLANTATION TOUR
2 days

We drive through lush green countryside north of Yogyakarta and visit on our way the home industry of soja bean curd. Further we watch the skillful craftsman producing handicraft made of buffalo horn. Staying overnight in a simple, but nice bungalow situated in amidst a coffee plantation. We will have the opportunity to watch the process of making rubber and we walk up on a small hill with a nice view overlooking a swamp area. Go for a boat ride on our way back to Yogyakarta.
